Frequently Asked Questions

Q. Does Weld County have a leash law?
A. Yes, Weld County has adopted an ordinance 14-4-20 that reflects the necessity to keep your dog on your own, rented, or leased property. A dog is considered at large when not under the control of the owner, which means physical restraint of a leash or containing device.

Q. What are the fines if my dog is caught running at large?
A. A summons may be issued with a first offense fee of $25; second offense $50; third offense $200; and four or more offenses, a mandatory court appearance is required. If a dog bites a person while running at large it will be quarantined at the Humane Society of Weld County and a mandatory court summons will be issued.

The owner is responsible for the charges of the impoundment 14-4-50 and necessary vet cost. This fee is set by the shelter. A dog will be kept a minimum of 3 days if found without a collar, and 5 days with a collar. If your animal is found with a collar and tags, every possible effort will be made to contact you. If we cannot reach you we will take the animal to the shelter.

Q. What are the licensing fees in Weld County?
A. Weld County does not require you to license or register your dog, if you live in unincorporated areas of the county. Each city has their own laws regarding this, so be sure to check with your city to find out their regulations!

It is highly recommended a microchip or collar with tags be on all dogs in order
to reach their owners!

Q. Is there a limit on the number of animals I can have?
A. Yes! Weld County has zoning ordinances that reflect the number of animal units allowed in a particular zoned area of the county. Zone A agriculture may have up to 4 dogs on property between 1 and 10 acres, and no more than 8 dogs on property 10 acres or more. More than that requires a special use permit for kenneling practices. These cases will be referred to the Planning and Zoning Services Department.
