Command Staff -

2008 Sheriff’s Office command staff consists of:

Professional Standards Division -

In 2008 there were 84 administrative investigations completed by Sheriff’s Office supervisors.  These investigations were either initiated internally or by someone not associated with the Sheriff’s Office.  Out of the 84 investigations, 38 were either unfounded, not sustained, or exonerated.  The investigations that were found to be sustained resulted in oral or written warnings, suspensions, reprimands, or terminations. 

Pubic Information Officer -

The PIO consists of one full time employee and one part time employee handling public relations with citizens and media outlets.  In 2008 the unit created 56 press releases and participated in numerous media interviews.  All press releases are archived on our website and are available here >>

Civil Unit -

The civil unit consists of 6 part time civilian process servers and 2 full time office staff.  In 2008 the unit received 9,471 civil papers and served 8,654 of those for a success rate of 91.4%.  Revenue generated by civil process was $266,100.  For fees related to civil process pleas visit the civil page here >>

Office of Emergency Management -

The office of emergency management works with other agencies throughout Weld County and the state to train and prepare the citizens of Weld County to recover from natural and man made disasters.

In 2008 the OEM coordinated with the City of Greeley and hosted a pandemic flu exercise.  This was an exercise for elected officials and a functional exercise that included Weld, Larimer, Morgan and Logan Counties as well as the Weld, Larimer, and Northeast Health Departments.  The purpose was to test current county and community operation plans.  The OEM also participated in a statewide response to the Alamosa water incident and the Democratic National Convention. 

The office of emergency management was responsible for managing a major tornado which destroyed a large part of Windsor on May 22, 2008.  The Emergency Operations Center was launched and helped coordinate the responses to the disaster consisting of hundreds of fire, EMS, and law enforcement personnel from Weld County and beyond.  Visit the OEM webpage here >> for more information.

Victim Services Unit -

In 2008 the victim services unit consisted of 2 full time employees and 8 volunteer victim advocates.  The unit is available 24 hours a day for the agencies they serve and provided services to 1789 victims in 2008.

Fugitive / Warrants Unit -

The fugitive / warrants unit handles several job functions for the sheriff’s office.  In addition to tracking and arresting fugitives the unit performs extraditions from other states, sheriff sales, evictions, and transports prisoners throughout the state for court appearances or to sentenced facilities. In 2008 the unit drove 110,497 miles, safely moving 3943 inmates.  By participating in Transports Across Colorado (TAC) Weld County was able to travel 48,456 less miles.  There were 110 extraditions completed for the year.  The unit also handled 10 sheriff sales, 9 orders for possession, and performed 980 evictions.

Auxiliary Services Unit -

The auxiliary services unit includes the sheriff’s posse, volunteers, and reserve deputies which totaled 86 members in 2008.  The unit provides security at venues and helps with other events such as DUI checkpoints.  In 2008 the Posse donated 7501 hours, volunteers 2000 hours, and reserves 870 hours to the citizens of Weld County.  The average amount of hours donated by each member was 121 hours each.

Weld County Law Enforcement Chaplains Corps

The chaplains corps is a multi-denominational unit that serves all law enforcement agencies in Weld County.  There are 4 active chaplains in the unit.  One of the Chaplains is a Naval Reserve Officer and serves as a Chaplain there.  A second member just returned from the Sudan in Africa where he helped train the Sudanese Army Chaplains.  The unit presides over graduations and is active in conducting the yearly Law Enforcement Officer’s Memorial Service in May.

Honor Guard -

The honor guard symbolizes honor, loyalty, and commitment to the citizens of Weld County.  Sheriff Cooke selects officers from corrections and deputies from patrol to serve in the guard.  The guard completed 30 missions in 2008 including games for the Denver Broncos, Colorado Rockies, and the Colorado Eagles in addition to serving in the annual Fallen Peace Officer’s Memorial and other community events.  Currently the guard has 19 active members.

Concealed Weapons Report -

Currently there are 2228 valid concealed weapons permits in Weld County.  9 permits were denied in 2008 and 3 were revoked.  In 2008 there were 834 permits issued compared to 291 in 2007, a 65% increase.

In 2008 several municipal courts partnered with the sheriff’s office and now publish their warrants in our online database.  The municipalities include the courts of Frederick, Greeley, Evans, and Milliken.

Contracted Law Enforcement Services -

The sheriff’s office provides law enforcement services on a contract basis to incorporated towns within Weld County or to private businesses and events that might need temporary law enforcement services.  In 2008 the sheriff’s office provided contract law enforcement to:
