A local box turtle recently had an injured foot mended thanks to a chance encounter with the Weld County Sheriff’s Office.

About 3 p.m. April 14, Animal Control Officer Caitlin Perun was on a routine patrol when she noticed a turtle trying to cross Ledyard Road South in Platteville. When she stopped to help the little guy along, she noticed one the turtle’s toes had recently been severed.

Perun picked up the turtle and brought him to a veterinary clinic specializing in exotic pets where he received treatment for his injury. Perun picked the turtle up the next day and returned him to the place where she found him, which happened to be an area in the county where researchers are studying turtle populations.

Note that veterinarians also inspected the damage to the Box turtle’s shell and determined it was stable. The damage was estimated to be about four to five years old and healed.
