Update: Weld deputies clear 6 police impersonator suspects, investigation ongoing

Posted on 04/03/2020

The Weld County Sheriff’s Office’s Criminal Impact Unit has investigated and cleared six potential police impersonators.

Investigators with the Criminal Impact Unit, also known as the Strike Team, have received more than 30 tips through the tip line since Wednesday. The sheriff’s office is now working on the ongoing investigation with other agencies throughout northern Colorado, including the Greeley Police Department, Fort Collins Police Services, the Larimer County Sheriff’s Office, Frederick Police Department, Longmont Police Department and the Colorado State Patrol, among others.

It has come to the attention of the Criminal Impact Unit through the investigation that some individuals are taking advantage of media reports about a police impersonator to use it as an excuse for being late to or missing work. The sheriff’s office not only wants to remind residents false reporting is a crime, but that it also diverts valuable resources away from catching the real suspect or suspects.

Investigators continue to search for the suspect vehicle, which is described as a black Dodge Charger that might be equipped with emergency lights in the dash, and may or may not be outfitted with magnetic, law enforcement-type signs on the door. It is believed the Charger is a 2016 or similar model.

The suspect is described as a heavy-set white man of medium height with light hair. He might also be wearing dark clothing he is trying to pass off as a police uniform.

As a reminder, the sheriff’s office doesn’t routinely use unmarked cars for traffic enforcement and isn’t during this time of the Coronavirus pandemic. If you are being pulled over by a car that you can’t identify, slow down, put on your emergency flashers and call 911 to confirm the stop is legitimate.

Anyone who thinks they have been pulled over by a police impersonator is asked to call the Weld County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Impact Unit at (970) 304-6464.

Anyone with information regarding this or any other crime is asked to call the Weld County Sheriff’s Office at (970) 356-4015 or Northern Colorado Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).
