This is an update to the press release that was issued last night regarding the Greeley Police Dept. officer-involved shooting.

The CIRT team would like to update the public and the media with the most recent investigative information regarding the sequence of events that took place last night:

The initial information indicated, “The man discharged his gun, and the officers returned fire.” Investigators have learned the following sequence of events:

An officer initiated a traffic stop to arrest the male driver who had an active felony warrant, for motor vehicle theft. He refused to stop his vehicle. Greeley police officers discontinued the attempted traffic stop.

Officers located the man on foot on the UNC campus. They attempted to contact him to arrest him on the felony warrant. Officers gave orders for bystanders to leave the area.

The man brandished a gun.

Two officers were following the man and giving loud verbal commands to drop the gun.

Two other officers were approaching the area from the opposite side. The man still had the gun in his hand, as he approached the area of Garden Theatre.

The man turned towards two of the officers with the gun in his hand.  An officer heard gunfire and aired on the radio that he was being shot at. Two officers on the opposite side of Garden Theatre had fired their guns. The man was shot by officers, and sustained a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

In addition to these details, investigators have learned the man with the gun is deceased. His identity will be released by the Weld County Coroner’s Office.

This is still an active, on-going investigation. Further information will not be released until it becomes available.
