Firearms Safety Course Eligibility Cards
Beginning August 1st, 2026 per Colorado Senate Bill (SB) 25-003, prior to the purchase of a specified semiautomatic firearm (SSF) in the state of Colorado. You must first submit an application through the Colorado Division of Parks and Wildlife and then enroll and complete an extended firearms safety course or a hunter education course and basic firearm safety course.
A list of firearms that fall under the SSF definition per the Colorado Department of Revenue. Please note this is the first draft and may be edited prior to August 1st 2026.

Colorado Parks & Wildlife Application
The Weld County Sheriff’s Office is now accepting applications online.
A letter will be mailed to the address with approval and card or reason for denial. You may also come in person to the Weld County Sheriff's Office Administration Building, 1950 O St. in Greeley. Walk-ins are welcome, no appointments are necessary. Applications are accepted from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Applications also are processed in-person by appointment at the Southwest Substation, 4209 CR 24 ½ in Longmont. Call (720) 652-4215 to make an appointment.
You must bring in:
- Photo ID or Driver’s License. If the address on the front of the applicant's driver’s license doesn't match the current address, and you don't have proof of your current address, the application will not be accepted.
Acceptable documents for proof of address include:
- Electric bill
- Sewer bill
- Lease agreement
- Town Bill
- Gas bill
- Mortgage statement
- Property tax statement
- Printed application completed on the CPW website
- The results of a completed name-based background check of National and Colorado Public Criminal History and Judicial Databases completed by a third-party vendor that conducts those checks as a normal part of the vendors business.
- An attestation from the vendor that the background check was performed by the vendor.
- Payment for the $52 fee established by Division of Parks and Wildlife. This fee is not refundable whether approved or denied. There will be no other charges collected by the Sheriff’s Office.
The list of Concealed Handgun Permit instructors now includes those who are also SSF certified. If you are already a verified instructor, you may email your SSF certification to jbean@weld.gov.
