Published on April 01, 2026
[Weld County, COLO.] Last night, around 11:20 P.M. a WCSO patrol deputy was running radar on Highway 85 just south of Weld County Road 6. The deputy saw a white Jeep Cherokee traveling northbound he suspected was speeding. He checked his radar and confirmed the vehicle was traveling at 103 miles per hour but had slowed down to 100 miles per hour.
The deputy pulled out of the median and onto Highway 85 northbound and he suspected the driver may be impaired based on his observations. The deputy eventually caught up to the Jeep and saw the driver change lanes several times. When the deputy turned on his emergency lights, the vehicle continued northbound. The deputy noticed the driver accelerated, so he turned on his siren and notified additional patrol units that the driver was failing to yield.
The deputy pursued the vehicle through the Fort Lupton area and onto Highway 52. The driver continued onto the southbound Highway 85 on-ramp from Highway 52. The driver eventually got out of the vehicle and fled on foot from the deputy across Highway 85.
Deputies were notified Fort Lupton Police detained a male in the lobby of the Motel 6 who they suspected to be the driver of the Jeep.
Through the deputy’s investigation, the driver of the Jeep was identified as Jose Rojas-Zuniga Jr. The Jeep he was allegedly driving was confirmed to have been stolen, and the license plate displayed on the vehicle was not assigned to it. Deputies also learned that Rojas-Zuniga’s driver’s license was revoked, and he had several active warrants. Rojas-Zuniga was arrested on suspicion of the following charges:
- Motor vehicle theft-possession of a stolen vehicle
- Obstructing a peace officer
- Vehicular eluding
- Drove vehicle when license under restraint (revoked)
- Displayed/possessed/sold fictitious license plate
- Failed to drive in single lane (weaving)
- Speeding (40 mph over prima facie limit)
- Reckless driving
- Failed to obey traffic control signal
The sheriff’s Office is grateful that the incident concluded safely, and that the suspect is now in custody. We remain committed to protecting our community and ensuring the safety of all residents. We would like to extend our gratitude to the Fort Lupton Police Department for their assistance.
No further information will be released today. All charges are merely accusations, and a defendant is presumed innocent until, or unless proven guilty in a court of law. ###
